How does one go from poor/slow responder to a candidate for OHSS?

In my first IVF cycle, I was categorized as a poor/slow responder and they had to constantly up my meds and on a good day I had 5 measurable follicles and after 13 days of stims, I had a max E2 of 1900.

Now this cycle, I am on 7 day of stims with an E2 of 4200 and 10 medium sized follicles ranging from 12 to 18 mm. My nurse called me today and said that they are "coasting" me. Basically, keeping me on a holding pattern hoping that my E2 rise will stop and they can do the ER. She also gave me instructions to drink gatorade and eat protein to prevent OHSS.

I'm thinking: What the hell? What is going on with my body? Can't it make up it's mind?

Last cycle they wanted to cancel me due to poor response and this cycle due to OHSS.

Oh yeah, and the only clothes that still fit me are the great maternity/fertility pants!

Well, knock me over with a feather! So much for their poor responder diagnosis! Clearly they just put you on the wrong protocol the first time and the "tweak" the doctor made for this cycle is working all too well. I hope the coasting calms the girls down and lets you get to retrieval.

What a rollercoaster this IV*F thing is! I've got all fingers, toes, and eyeballs crossed for you, babe.

Oh, brother! If it's not one thing, it truly is another in this ballgame . . .

Eat your protein! Drink your Gatorade! Hang in!

Well, at least now you know why you needed those new pants so soon! E2 4200! Wow! I hope you can dodge that OHSS, and can make it to ER without any more troubles. 10 eggs, though, that's great news. Almost there. Good luck with the coasting!

That's so strange. Can they give you an explanation for what's going on? That's what irritates me so much about this process...the unpredictability. Hang in there. Become one with the gatorade!

My doc always warned me that the body can react totally differently each cycle, but this is great news that you are so responsive this time! I hope the coasting even things out. I did a lot of G2 and protein powder shakes during my IVF, and that seemed to keep things from getting too bad. Take care of yourself, I'll be hoping for the best!
